Heather O'Rourke died shortly before filming ended, and
the film is dedicated to her memory. By the time this
film was begun, Dominique Dunne, who played her on-screen
sister in Poltergeist (1982), had been murdered. See also
_"V" (1983) (mini)_ .
Tom Skerritt makes a reference to Brian De Palma's Carrie
to Nancy Allen. This is presumably an in-joke, as Allen
had starred in that film, as Chris Hargenson, back in
1976.
End credits explain that the role of Reverend Kane had
originally been portrayed by Julian Beck.
Following the tragic death of Heather O'Rourke during
filming, it was the opinion of director Gary Sherman to
end production of the film. However, due to the amount of
money that had already been spent, this was never going to
happen. Certain aspects of the story had to be changed,
including the ending. In a 2002 interview Gary Sherman
said the movie never became what it was supposed to be as
a result of this.
Zelda Rubinstein had to leave the production midway
because of her mother's death.
At the beginning of the film, the characters mistakenly
believe that the weather outside is cold. When they
descend from the upper floors to the ground level however,
they find that it is in fact quite warm. This phenomenon
of weather varying from the upper to lower floors actually
does occur at the Hancock Center due to the building's
height. Residents often call the lobby doormen before
leaving their apartments to find out what conditions are
like at ground level.
Goofs: After something strange happens in the bathroom as
Donna gets ready for a party, Carol Anne and Donna walk
into the main hall of the apartment. In the back, there is
a large mirror. In the bottom, right-hand corner of the
mirror, a crew member's bottom is shown wearing sandy
brown dress pants.
When Doctor Seaton is hypnotizing Carol Anne, he puts his
hand on her face to calm her down. When she does, her
head slants. In the next shot of her, her head is dead
centered.
Edits: For TV:
Where Scott says "Watch it little ass hole" to a child
at Carol Anne's special school.
In the scene where Donna leaves and there are several
men that resemble Kane closing doors.
When Donna bursts through Tangina.
The scene where Scott and Donna make out and then he
rips her face off.
The shots of the frozen meats that begin to struggle
and scream.
The chase up the emergency stairway for Carol Anne.
The scene where Bruce hits Carol Anne's window and says
"F***ing son of a bitch."
Alternate scene to replace the puddle scene for
television versions in 1993. When Carol Anne is in her
bedroom and gets pulled up the mirror, she actually does
get dragged into the mirror in this scene. While Donna
and Scott ended up falling into the puddle, they too
slipped into the mirror.
