Die erste Youtube-Single-Auskopplung war der mit Groove geschwängerte Song "Dispossession", der hier verlinkt ist und das gut 40-minütige Album eröffnet - welch mächtiger Opener!
Im Prinzip ist damit schon die ganze Marschrichtung für die nächsten neun wuchtigen Tracks der Platte gegeben. Northlane bietet kompromisslosen Hardcore-Metal, der mit einigen progressiven Versatzstücken vermischt ist. So rücken nicht nur die obligaten und brachialen Breakdowns (wie bei vielen anderen Bands) in den Vordergrund, vielmehr bleibt tatsächlich genug kreativer Freiraum für musikalische Finessen übrig, den die Band mit wuchtigen Riffs und mäandrierenden Tempi- und Taktwechseln nicht nur einfach ausfüllt, sondern im versierten Spiel damit das angestaubte Genre (fast) in neue Sphären hebt. Einer der wichtigsten Einflüsse neuester Zeit ging ebenfalls nicht spurlos an Northlane vorbei: die stark in Mode gekommene "djentige" Gitarren-Spielart lässt sich immer wieder aus den einzelnen Stücken heraushören, vielfach ist genau diese auch für die fantastischen Grooves verantwortlich. Demnach ist es kein Zufall mehr, wenn man sich während der "Entdeckungsreise" plötzlich an Künstler wie Meshuggah erinnert fühlt, von denen schliesslich behauptet wird, die Urväter des Djents zu sein.
Neun der zehn Songs hauen mit dem Dampfhammer voll auf die Zwölf, eine nette Überraschung und Abwechslung erwartet den Hörer in der Mitte des Albums mit dem titelgebenden Instrumental "Discoveries", das zwar einem einfachen Strickmuster zu folgen scheint, jedoch an vielen Stellen mit feinen spielerischen Details aufwartet und sowieso ein geniales Ende mit köstlichem Riffing bietet - das Stück ist allemal eine Entdeckung wert!
Um Entdeckungen geht es auch hauptsächlich in den Texten, die, von Adrian souverän in genretypische Screams und Growls verpackt, ihre treibende Wirkung nicht verfehlen und darüber hinaus ziemlich gut verständlich (sprich: man kann die Worte raushören) beim Hörer ankommen, was für mich in diesem Genre öfters eine Hürde darstellt. Zugegeben, inhaltlich mögen die Lyrics ein wenig mau sein und sich außerdem stellenweise wiederholen, trotzdem lassen sich einige ausgefeilte "Punchlines" ausfindig machen, die den Nagel gezielt auf den Kopf treffen. Kleines Beispiel gefällig? In "Corruption" heißt es "We've created a seed that has spread to the core of humanity. Killing itself from the inside. Unintentional suicide"; am Ende von "Dispossession" schreit Adrian in erzürnter Manier "Cast aside the fear of reality, face the fucking world".
Mir persönlich gefallen solche ausdrucksstarke Zeilen, zusätzlich lässt sich der Einfluss östlichen Gedankenguts (wie man es beispielweise im Buddhismus vorfindet) nicht von der Hand weisen, geht es doch auch um Identitätskrisen und die dunklen Täler Mephistos', in denen die Welt sich gefangen sieht.Josh Smith hat sich in einem Interview folgendermaßen zu den Texten und dem Sound des Albums geäußert:
The lyrics are about the internal and external discoveries you make throughout the course of your life, and although they are really personal, most people will be able to relate to them. Musically we wanted to take the best vibes from hardcore and mix it with some deeper soundscapes with a progressive feel. There’s huge influences in there from post hardcore bands like Underoath in that respect but the vocals are straight from the heart and you’ll hear some really big Meshuggah-esque riffs in there too.

Die Texte handeln von den inneren und äußeren Entdeckungen, die man während des Verlaufs seines Lebens macht und obwohl sie sehr persönlich sind, werden die meisten Leute sich selbst darin wiederfinden. Musikalisch wollten wir die besten Vibes aus dem Hardcore-Genre nehmen und sie mit einigen tieferen Klanglandschaften mit progressivem Flair mischen. In diesem Zusammenhang lassen sich große Einflüsse von Post-Hardcore-Bands wie Underoath ausmachen, die Vocals kommen aber direkt vom Herzen und du wirst einige eindrucksvolle Riffs hören, die man sonst von Meshuggah kennt.
Produktionstechnisch gefällt die Platte mit warmem, "ehrlichem" Klang. Kein Wunder, haben doch die Jungs die ganze Scheibe selbst aufgenommen und erst später von Will Putney in den Staaten mischen lassen, der einen ordentlichen Job gemacht und dafür gesorgt hat, dass alle Instrumente differenziert und druckvoll in Szene gesetzt sind.
An den Instrumenten sind die Jungs sowieso über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Angefangen bei den Gitarristen, die im Duo teils abartige Klangteppiche aus ihren Klampfen hervorzaubern, über den Bass, der immer die passende und druckvolle Untermalung liefert, bis hin zum Mann am Schlagzeug, der mit typischem, aber auch komplexem Trommelspiel sein Können eindrucksvoll unter Beweis stellt - Northlane spielt musikalisch und spieltechnisch ganz oben mit!
Insgesamt verleiht die eigenständige Produktion dem Album zusätzlichen Charme und unterstreicht nochmals, dass sich Northlane zwar erst am Anfang der Karriere befindet, die Leiter an die Spitze sich jedoch in unmittelbarer Nähe befindet (und steil nach oben führt...).
Ich wünsche den fünf Metalheads aus Sydney auf jeden Fall alles Gute für ihre Zukunft und freue mich jetzt schon auf ihr zweites Album. Discoveries zeigt meiner Meinung nach unnachgiebig und eindrucksvoll, welch großes Potential hier zum Teil noch schlummert und geradezu danach fleht, endlich aufgeweckt und vor allem gehört zu werden, auf dass schon sehr bald der nächste "australische Nordwind" donnernd über die Welt peitscht!
Probehören kann man das Werk übrigens am besten auf YouTube. Dort lassen sich (atm) alle Lieder finden. Dennoch möchte ich an dieser Stelle die Leute, denen der Sound zusagt, freundlich daran erinnern, dass harte Arbeit und viel Herzblut hinter einem solchen Projekt steckt. Wer "Discoveries" also mag, sollte die Scheibe direkt über den UNFD- oder iTunes-Store beziehen (zumindest bis die CD in den regulären Geschäften erscheint).
