Summary
Simon and Amanda represent Dr Freeman, a young, well-meaning
GP whose 15-year old anorexic patient died. Freeman's
methods were experimental, his notes are patchy and the
anorexic girl, it seems, was deceiving him. Richard
represents the mother in a claim for nervous shock.
Amanda is also representing obstetrician Dr Holdforth, but
he is dissatisfied with her advocacy in a coroner's inquest.
Holdforth delivered premature twins, one of whom then died
in the ambulance on the way to a neonatal facility. He
demands Happy replace Amanda in the civil action brought
against him, on behalf of the mother, by Richard's coolly
glamorous assistant, Jo Gilchrist. As if that's not enough,
Richard goes over Amanda's head to Happy to reopen a damages
claim - on behalf of a young child with a burnt hand - that
Amanda has rejected. It's a test case under the new
"insurance model" for medical indemnity.
Richard also drops hints to Happy that he and Amanda got
more than friendly at Richard's party at Kato's. Happy's
always willing to believe the worst and passes on these
hints to Simon.
Layla wants to withdraw the feeding tube from her
unconscious grandmother, who's been in a vegetative state
for over a year. But she learns she needs a ruling from the
Supreme Court. Giles Jones QC agrees to represent her.
Things look bad for Dr Freeman in the anorexia case. He
claims he recommended to the dead girl and her mother that
she be hospitalised, but the girl and mother refused. The
mother denies it. To back his claim that the girl was
deceiving this na ve doctor, Richard produces the dead
girl's diary. But Amanda finds evidence in the diary that Dr
Freeman did recommend hospital - and Simon works out the
weight loss drugs in the girl's blood were inadvertently
supplied by the mother. The claim is reduced, but Freeman
deeply regrets his over-confidence.
Happy handballs the burnt hand case back to Amanda. She
settles for $100,000. Jamie is disgusted. By this he has
come to know the mother of the twins as a doctor and she
only receives a mere $40,000. And Amanda, already angry with
blabbermouth Happy, is bewildered when Simon refuses a
friendly drink after work.
