Summary
Ella has a problematic new staff member at St Albans
Emergency Department. Mikhail Voronin is an experienced
Russian cardio-thoracic surgeon whose qualifications are not
recognised in Australia. Mikhail is frustrated, disruptive,
disrespectful and heedless of hospital protocols. St Albans
admin and some doctors would like to get rid of him. But
he's also funny, charming and attracted to Ella.
Richard prepares to represent Martine, a ballerina, who
claims negligent spinal surgery has ruined her career. But
Richard discovers that Martine may not have had a career to
lose. She was no longer up for leading roles and may've been
drug addicted before the operation. He insists she undergo a
psychiatric assessment.
Things are rather icy between Simon and Amanda when they go
to the country to investigate a GP accused of
over-servicing. When they meet the doctor and his patients,
however, they realise that the doctor is working 80 hours a
week to ensure the health and safety of isolated and
debilitated elderly patients where other support services
have been withdrawn. On the way home, Amanda challenges
Simon over his coldness. Simon confesses his jealousy and
Amanda reveals there isn't anything to be jealous about.
They end up in bed.
Martine the ballerina doesn't show up for mediation. Richard
does a deal with Happy to extend the time on MDA's offer
until Richard can get Martine some help. But Martine, now
unmasked, overdoses - perhaps deliberately - before Richard
can tell her what he's done.
At St Albans, a patient needs immediate chest surgery.
Mikhail Voronin is there. The qualified duty surgeon, Mark
Matthews, is minutes away. Ella orders Mikhail to go ahead
and even assists him. They save the patient's life, but they
are both in trouble. Jamie alerts Happy, but Ella is
sticking to her guns. Mikhail doesn't seem to care. He
invites Ella to go dancing.
