Penned with assistance from sci-fi supremo author David Brin the
story concerns an enlightened Earth where mankind and dolphin have
lived in mutual harmony for centuries, sharing knowledge and
exploring the cosmos together until a malicious alien race brought
the utopia abruptly to an end. They did this by opening a fissure in
time and travelling back to Earth's distant past, before the moment
the dolphin race revealed their true level of intelligence and social
being to humanity, robbing them of these qualities and allowing man
to evolve and develop unchecked by the cetaceans' higher moral
senses.
Ecco must travel through a number of alternate timelines in which
humankind's excesses have created a horribly polluted world,
recovering the stolen dolphin intellectual properties so he can
restore the future to its proper state. He must achieve this by
following the cryptic instructions of the crystalline Guardian and
conversing with his fellow aquatic inhabitants (through the use of
his natural sonar pings). New abilities such as being able to hold
his breath for longer, turn invisible and control machinery using a
psychic harness must be obtained and many dangerous submerged
citadels explored before Ecco can repair the damage done to history.
