The people of the world are understandably nervous, and yet uncomfortably excited by the prospect of controlled war. There hasn't been a major conflict of any significance for centuries, and all the other sports have become so pass and mundane that they have been relegated to very niche markets. The world was just screaming out for a little spice to break the boredom. Humans need conflict and that's a fact. If you're not involved in conflict, then you sure as hell want someone else's to look at. WarTorn has fantastic prize packages on offer so the response from would be Warlords and others, destined to be cannon fodder, has been extreme, to say the least. Anyone can fit the role of a natural born killer, given the right encouragement, but the teams do have to be selective. After all if your not winning, the sponsors will not be happy and may pull out. You have to pass psychological examination from the team shrink. This will also determine you responsibility within the team. Only those with the most brilliant and twisted minds become Warlords. Competition for this position is fierce, and a fair amount of off field skulduggery has been taking place. The rules have changed little, since ancient times, as far as can be accurately determined anyway. The technology used for combat is restricted by tournament themes, with the initial theme having been determined by a populous vote, to be 20th century, a nostalgic era to be sure. The PSS (Public Sports Service) has bought the rights to televise the events worldwide. Massive war arenas have been built worldwide in preparation for the start of the first season, commencing on new years day 3000 AD. The controlling body FIWA has strict guidelines on all aspects of WarTorn. For example, the arenas must be at least 2 kilometres square and scalable using the official "Terra Tech " arena modifier, up to 10 kilometres square. They can be of any topographical composition, with no limit placed on the type and number of hazards contained. All arenas are inspected by FIWA official and certified to support up to a given number of teams in any one tournament. The number of suitable base areas and amount of resources deposited in the arena are the main guides for the rating given. Designers, the guidelines say, should always keep in mind that WarTorn is a controlled spectator war sport and as such, the layout of the arena should be conducive to great battles and great television. The Teams' warlord may select from a package of endorsed 20th century weaponry replica components. The tools for on field manufacture and modification of are supplied through FIWA, along with an initial quantity of resources, to be used for the establishment of a base. During the course of a tournament, resources are to be mined with pre- fabricated extraction buildings. Raw resources are included in the arena design and are utilised by the teams to provide ongoing materials for the war effort. An efficient design in the layout of a base is considered to be a prime element in determining the outcome of a tournament. A free trade system operates during the course of a tournament, whereby the warlord can exchange raw or processed materials for finished war machines and troops offered by other warlords. The tournament referee may also offer other items up to stimulate the war spectacle if this is deemed necessary. Game Features: * Design Objectives WarTorn is designed to be a complete and unique 3D strategy experience. While designing WarTorn I had a few key design themes of note: - I really wanted to place the power into the hands of the player. To this end, WarTorn offers the players the ability to select a style of game play that best suits their own tastes. A huge number of settings are exposed to the player allowing them to essentially design, very simply, their own style of game, or modify one of the ones provided. In a nutshell, to be as configurable as possible. - Another was to base WarTorn on the reduction of the war ideal to its simplest form. That of a global tournament. This is where 32 countries battle it out for the WarTorn World Cup. - Address some of the known shortcomings and annoyances of older strategy games. * Tournament Play The Tournament play allows the player to compete and be ranked on a global scale. A FREE online service will be provided for the benefit of players. This service will provide both a connection point and a global leader board. The Tournament concept will be further enhanced, as we will be running global competitions. It is intended that these competitions will be covering a number of different categories and divisions. * Formation Editor The Formation Editor is one of the most useful and practical innovations for RTS games to premier in WarTorn. The Player now has the ability to design any formation desired and to save this for later use. The formation editor even allows the player to determine the unit spacing and specific unit type placement within the formation. * Attack Planner The attack planner has to be one of the best features to ever hit the Real Time Strategy genre. This feature brings the whole co-ordinate attack theory to reality! One of the most annoying shortcomings about the battle experience in RTS games to date has been the inability to coordinate a large-scale attack. What usually happens is the player builds the large army, and then moves off to battle only to find that the whole attack plan has gone awry because units or groups did not arrive when they were supposed to. Well, No longer! The Attack planner available in WarTorn solves this problem. The Attack planner allows the player to perfectly time and execute the movements of their Air, Land or Sea units. Each attack plan may be saved and a number of different attack plans may be combined and executed at the player's discretion. * Various Game Play Modes - Skirmish - This mode has been designed for those players wanting fast action gameplay and also those not wanting to use the resources management functions in WarTorn. This basically involves the player selecting a number of units. Then taking them into battle. Both the Formation editor and the Attack planner are provided to further enhance the gameplay. - Full Strategy - This mode allows players the most configurable and in depth Real Time Strategy game experience. This includes features like the ability to mine resources, build and customize their own units, formations and attack plans. - Turn Based - This mode allows the player to take turns in input control, appealing to those that prefer a slower more deliberate style of strategy game. This can be applied to Skirmish or Full Strategy modes. - Hunter/Hunted - Players take turns at being the Hunted or Hunter. Can be applied to Skirmish or Full Strategy modes. * Custom Camouflage Player's have the ability to place their own custom camouflage directly into WarTorn. These camouflages are automatically transferred to other players in all multiplayer modes * Custom Insignia's Player's have the ability to place their own custom insignia directly into WarTorn. Which is particularly important for team players. * Realism Realism has been a major design feature in WarTorn. Each country maintains its own home battlefield and will strive to the make their team and country the world number one. * Scaleable Battlefields The player has the control to choose the size of the battlefield they wish to play on. The battlefields in WarTorn are the largest ever seen in a real-time strategy game! An area from 3km to 10km's allows for both the fast action battle provided by close proximity smaller 3 - 4 km battlefields and large campaigns on the huge 5 - 10 km battlefields * Day and Night Battle The battle in WarTorn may be scheduled at such times as to allow play at deferent times of the Day or Night. Battles will also continue to rage through both these periods allowing for different tactical styles * Co-Operative Modes - Single Base - Allows a game where 1 player has responsibility for base management and defence and another player has responsibility for attack. - Multiple Bases - Where players are part of the same team but operate independently. * Variable Degree Camera System Another objective of WarTorn is to give the player the complete freedom of the camera movement. This not only increases the total immersion factor in WarTorn, but also enables the player to zoom right in on the action or zoom right out for the perfect general's view. * Different AI Attributes for each Country The AI has been based on historical WWI & WWII battle preferences. Thus the AI is uniquely different for each Country. Each country will opt for a preferred defensive and attack method. For example: - Some countries will prefer a more Defensive approach to battle and will build strong base defences. Others will have a more aggressive attack style. * Market Trading System This feature allows the player to buy and sell resources on a realistic open market trading system. Realistic exchange rates are set for each resource based on the resources availability. This is particularly useful when a player has mined an abundance of one resource and wishes to purchase more of another type of resource or even wishes to convert some of their resources to credits. * Unit Transportation WarTorn is one of the only games that allows the player to transport ground units via Air, Land or Sea. For example, it is possible for a player to parachute in a tank and or infantry. * Customisable Interface The interface in WarTorn is customisable by the player allowing a number of interface features to be hidden or displayed. * Interactive Map WarTorn provides the same camera and unit movement functionality on the map as in the 3D game view.
