Plot Outline : Set at around the year 2000 (then a lifetime away in
the future), a mammoth city is ruled by the super-
efficient industrialist Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel)
and, on the surface, appears to be a utopian dream
with wealthy inhabitants living in palatial apartments
set in colossal glass and concrete spires. But
underground it's a different story; armies of slaves
work gruelling shifts to maintain the luxurious
lifestyles of their masters. The workers, a subhuman
species of sluggish creatures are led by the 'Saintly'
Maria (Brigitte Helm), who urges them not to rebel but
to wait patiently for the arrival of the 'Mediator'.
Fredersen kidnaps Maria and orders mad scientist
Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) to create a robot replica
to take her place. His plan is doomed when the evil
mechanical Maria incites the massed worders to revolt
and destroy everything in sight.

Ripper's Notes:
This all new restoration of Fritz Lang's Metropolis from 1927
premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2001.
It's the most complete version of this movie so far (some parts are
considered lost forever) and a serious improvement over any previous
version. You can read all about this on the following sites:
http://www.kino.com/metropolis/ and http://www.alpha-omega.de/
Not only the image quality is an outstanding improvement in this
version, it also features a new recording of Gottfried Huppertz's
original score composed for the film. We have included a sample of
the old VCDVaULT release, which contains a different soundtrack and
is considerably cropped, so you can see and hear the differences for
yourself. With a length of 119 minutes, running at 25 unique frames
per second, this version is also considerably longer than the
137 minute vV rip. This can be explained by the low framerate of the
the source used for vV's DVD.
This release is ripped from the UK R2 DVD which come out a few weeks
ago, the US R1 DVD is scheduled for next week.
Besides an AC3 5.1 track for the orchestral score, we have included
an MP3 encode of film historian Enno Patalas' commentary as a second
track. Make sure you use a player capable of handling 2 sound streams
such as BSPlayer or Media Player Classic. The movie contains English
intertitles but subtitles for the commentary track are also included.
This movie is a visual masterpiece from the silent era and one of the
most influential films of all time.
Enjoy!
