The opening text regarding the restoration is not translated
in the subtitles, so here goes:
Manfred Noa's film HELENA (1924) is not preserved in its
original German version. All versions from other countries
are incomplete, come from different original negatives and
differ immensly in their montage. This reconstructed version
is based in large part on a tinted nitrate film copy of the
Swiss distribution copy stored by the Cin math que suisse in
Lausanne. It has been completed with material from Italian,
Spanish, Belgian and Russian versions, as well as outtakes
and rushes.
The original text of the intertitles is not preserved. The
graphic design of the titles is not known either. For the
reconstruction, the differing titles of the foreign copies
were compared to contemporary programmes and historical
sources. The presumable original frames of the intertitles
were taken from the Spanish distribution copy, the typface
from NATHAN DER WEISE, an epic Manfred Noa had staged for
Bavaria one year earlier.
