Some notes about this baby:
The aspect ratio changes from 1.33:1 to 1.36:1 somewhere at the
beginning of the second act and finally to 4.00:1 in the final
triptych scene. Since both dimensions are in full use at one time or
another there is no crop.
The film is split across 4 parts over 3 discs, all of which are
24.000fps. They also all have dupe frames, but unfortunately in no
consistent pattern. It starts out with 1/4 dupe frames and then later
changes to 1/6 (and maybe something else, didn't bother checking the
whole 333mins). Instead of trying to restore it and maybe end up with
some variable framerate weirdness I decided to just leave it as is.
Feel free to nuke it or try your luck at fixing it properly, I don't
really care at this point.
Extras:
- Commentary audio from Paul Cuff (mux script included)
- Alternative single screen ending scene (also not decimated or
anything in case anyone wants to mux their own version with this
ending)
- Individual panels of the triptych scene (also not decimated, because
why bother. Furthermore left and right panels are not cropped so that
the alignment isn't thrown off in case anyone actually wants to watch
this in a three screen setup)
- The Charm of Dynamite: A BBC documentary about Gance and his silent
films
- Composing Napoleon - An Interview with Carl Davis
I think that about covers it. In any case, enjoy!
