Ida Lupino was sometimes called "Queen Of The Bs" although she gave
fine performances in such "A" films as High Sierra and They Drive By
Night. In the late 40's, seeking greater creative control over her
projects, she formed her own production company, and began to direct,
as well as sometimes star in low-budget films whose subject matter was
different from the usual Hollywood fare. In making The Hitch-Hiker,
she became the only woman to ever direct a Film Noir.
In The Hitch-Hiker, considered to be Lupino's best film, two old Army
buddies on a fishing trip to Mexico pick up a hitch-hiker who turns
out to be a deranged serial-killer. And then things begin to go from
bad to worse.
