A FILM JOHNNIE: Charlie goes to a movie and falls in love with a girl
on the screen. He goes to Keystone Studios to find her. He disrupts the
shooting of a film, and a fire breaks out. Charlie is blamed, gets
squirted with a firehose, and is shoved by the female star.
CRUEL, CRUEL LOVE: A rich lord loves a girl. A maid who has seen the
two accosts the lord in a park and embraces him. This is seen by the girl
who calls off their relationship. The lord decides to commit suicide, but
the butler replaces the poison with water. The girl, her love now
restored, rushes to what she thinks is the lord's deathbed.
TRIPLE TROUBLE: As Colonel Nutt is experimenting with explosives, a new
janitor is joining his household. The inept janitor proceeds to make life
difficult for the rest of staff. Meanwhile, a foreign agent arrives at
the house in hopes of getting Col. Nutt's latest invention. The inventor
throws him out, so the agent then employs a thug to get the formula. When
police head to the Nutt home to start an investigation, a complicated
fracas ensues.

The GREDoR releases were done at incorrect framerates, and are full
of duplicate frames. Samples of the same scene from both releases are
included.

tdx rules require that, "MUST be as close to original source framerate as
possible."
GREDoR gave in their most recent NFO the reason for propering their own
previous release, "First rip was release with 29.97fps due it is pure ntsc
interlaced, but in 1918 they have'nt film cams, so the 23.97fps is much
closer fps rate to original."
So, in the first releases they claimed the films to be interlaced (pure
nonsense), and kept them at 29.97fps and deinterlaced. Now they've seen
the light, and IVTC'd down to 23.976fps, claiming there weren't any film
cameras during the silent era (also nonsense). Not good enough, when it's
a simple matter to remove all of the duplicate frames.
Why, you might ask, is it important to decimate to the proper framerate?
One reason to remove the dupe frames is so the film plays more smoothly.
Another and better reason when hard-to-compress films such as these are
involved is that by removing the dupe frames, you allow the available bits
to be distributed among fewer frames, in the case of TRIPLE TROUBLE, 33%
fewer frames, making for much better quality.
Also, their audio is too loud, and clips, and they aren't properly cropped.
I'm not going to bother propering the rest. I suggest that all of them be
nuked. These Madacy DVDs are of godawful quality, and are an insult to
Chaplin fans, silent film fans, and DVD fans everywhere.
