PLOT
This historical documentary was filmed on location across Russia,
Ukraine and Eastern Europe and is executive produced by Emmy and
BAFTA award winning producer Phillip Whitehead, who was also
responsible for documentaries such as The World at War, The
Kennedys, Stalin and Nixon. Combining Catherine's 'voice' as it
emerges from letters, with dramatic re-enactments of the events
of her life and reign, Catherine the Great also utilises CGI to
recreate some of the spectacular battles and incidents of her
imperial journey. Until recently, this unique documentary archive
remained under wraps, buried by a Soviet view of history that
regarded the personal as an irrelevance compared to the great
sweep of economic and social forces. Now the full story can be
told - with the vitality, humour and insight of a woman who was
not only a great ruler but an accomplished writer. A woman who
kept detailed memoirs in which she wrote as openly of her love
life as she did of her political ideology. Who corresponded with
some of the great minds of the Enlightenment and who wrote some
of the warmest love letters in history.
