Josephine Baker, while not appreciated in her home nation, quite
quickly found favor in France as both a novelty act and as a serious
dancer. She wasn't just a stage performer, however, but also made a
handful of films in France. This disc presents the earliest of
those pictures, a silent that nonetheless capitalizes on her music
hall dance performances. She stars as a Caribbean native who winds
up in Paris and becomes a music hall sensation. The story and the
other acters are pretty lame, but it's a good chance to see Baker in
her prime, as well as some of the dances on which her fame was built.
The video used a PAL transfer for the blended NTSC DVD. I've unblended
it as best I could. The decimated framerate was 21.407fps, which I
slowed to 21fps to make a nice whole number. There's a vob sample
included for anyone that cares to take a look. The audio has a much
lower bitrate than I might like. I had trouble compressing the video,
so I cut the audio size so everything would fit on 1 CD. It's mostly
piano, with some few other instruments from time to time, and it sounds
fine. I set the min/max bitrates to 32/192, and it has the bits
available when it needs them.
