PLOT
A maniac butchers a fashion model on a Caribbean
island and leaves the body to be eaten by rats. The
model's sister suspects something isn't quite right with
the police investagation and decides to go snooping on
her own. With her friend, Fred, their investagations
lead them to an unknown part of the island where they
discover a monstrosity of a rat-like man. The creature
is killed by Fred, but the true horror of its nature is
just beginning.
RIP NOTES
Ah, the Italians. Leave it to them to create the
trashiest, most exploitative horror around.
With the tagline "He's The Critter From The Shitter",
Ratman, or Quella villa in fondo al parco as it is known
by its original name, is by no means an exception.
Shot in the Dominican Republic, it stars native Nelson
de la Rosa (aka Mahow), the shortest actor ever, whose
part in the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau is
said to have been the inspiration for Verne Troyer's
infamous Austin Powers character Mini-Me. For anyone
wondering, yes, Verne towers a good 4 inches taller.
The plight of the dwarf actor was recently spoofed
quite successfully on the Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant
show Life's Too Short (starring Warwick Davis of Willow
fame), and it's no secret that the majority of parts
available to dwarves involve suits of some sort, and
often less than dignified roles, even when no canons or
throwing is involved. While inside industry "little
people" sources (happy now?) tell us that many are more
than happy to take on most parts, and consider it an
easy way to make a quick buck, most would probably agree
that wearing rat makeup and sitting in a birdcage
hissing is not the best way to make your parents proud.
Hey, at least he got to feast on some lovely ladies,
including Eva Grimaldi, and Swedish hottie Janet gren.
For this release we sourced the English dubbed R2 DVD
from Shameless. Many kudos to them for restoring a
complete and uncut version from multiple sources, but
you can tell it was done on a budget. We've tried to
clean up the audio a bit, but there wasn't much we could
do about the soft picture and poor contrast. Even so,
this is probably going to be the best version you're
likely to find of this title today.
Detached piece of trivia: ratman the creature is
explained as being a cross between rat and monkey,
notable for pre-dating the infamous stop motion Sumatran
Rat-Monkey of Braindead by a good five years! Similar to
its Sumatran successor-in-spirit, Ratman also carries a
fatal toxin, although his victims are never seen to
resurrect as zombies.
Enjoy!
WHO WE ARE
Since 2003, FLAiR has been dedicated to preserving
the neglected titles of an entertainment era long gone.
A time of classic kids flicks, painstaking hand-drawn
animation and countless cheesy low-budget horrors. A
time when pop had a King, and rock had a Queen. A time
when special FX wizards ruled, and CGI was just one of
their many tools.
Driven by nostalgia and memories of better days, we
seek to relive those times, and share those memories.
While our belief is that the 80s represent the very
pinnacle of pop culture, we will not limit ourselves
to one decade, or any single genre. We will not ignore
the movies considered insignificant or even embarrassing
by the studios. We will not disregard a timepiece just
because it is dated.
Whereas most groups rely solely on digital sources,
there are still thousands of rare and out of print
titles, many of which have no planned digital release.
We've made it our mission to dig these out, clean them
up using the best hardware and techniques available to
us, and share them with the world. Be it VHS, Laserdisc
or more exotic formats, we're here to bring you the best
(and worst!) of decades past. So sit back and enjoy as
we uncover and pay tribute to an age of cinema we will
never get back.
THANKS
To everyone that has supported us over the years and
managed to keep this fun!
