Plot:
1974 The Dumb Ox or Kung Fu Strongman or Return of the Panther or Chinese Kung
Fu. This movie has many titles. My copy seemed to be a German version based on
the title screen. It was wide screen but still had the edges chopped off and was
English dubbed. The resolution, color and such was pretty good even on a high
definition television screen. If there is a better legitimate copy out there I
would pay the money to upgrade. The movie starts with murder and robbery. Many
characters are introduced but pay attention because this is the good stuff. Kam
Kong has a criminal record as a thief but has served his time and now earns an
honest living as a blacksmith. He is the dumb ox in the title and this role was
made for him. All the rest of the actors are perfectly cast. Leung Siu-Chung
(Bruce Leung's father) is one of the action directors so the fights are solid
and realistic. Kam Kong is falsely accused so it is a flip on the old revenge
plot. The drama is done to spice up the action and not drag the action to a
stop. The director and editors got it right. Other than the Shaw Brothers
shaolin temple series I would rate this movie as the best martial arts movie
made in 1974. 8 out of 10. My highest recommendation for fans of the genre and
an excellent introduction for would-be fans.
