Choker Bali, based on the novel by Rabindranath Tagore is set
in the early 1900s. The film draws parallels between the British
colonization of Bengal and the domestic situation of a Calcutta
household. The announcement of the partition of Bengal sets off
protests in Calcutta. Beautiful young Binodini, widowed after
just a year of marriage, meets two of her earlier suitors,
Mahendra and Behari. Even though she feels closer to Behari,
a committed freedom fighter, she becomes Mahendra's mistress.
Sheltered by Mahendra's mother, Binodini befriends Ashalatha,
his wife. But her presence sparks a sensual and passionate
conflict among the young people, in the highly patriarchal
Indian society.
