SPECiAL NOTES : Enjoy one of acclaimed director PETER JACKSON's earlier
films. Yes, the same guy who did the overlong but still
wonderful LORD OF THE RINGS. Here are some of my notes...
About the weird rez... at the TDX meeting today (yesterday?)
we helped push a special allowance for FS 4:3 AR videos
since the # of pixels per frame at 512 horizontal rez is far
too great for many flicks to compress well. So here is
likely the first non-nuked FS 4:3 rip @ 480x352.
AR seems to be 2% off but that is due to cropping.
About the Aspect Ratio... this is the only R1 DVD (Canadian
import) available of this film, and sadly it is 4:3 P&S.
There is rumour of a French R2 WS DVD with Eng audio but
unfortunately it has burnt-on french subs and we don't
want that do we. The day a WS R1 DVD comes out, you bet
we'll release it... WS > FS always!
About the usage of AC3... understand that the AC3 track
for this movie was whacko and sounded like shit when
processed in LAME 3.92 using ABR or VBR bitrates of
between 130 to 145. Using --r3mix or --alt-preset standard
made the audio sound fine, but resulted in grossly oversized
MP3 files (greater than ~190kbps) so using the AC3 was the
smartest choice. It's possible one of the reasons the
AC3 was so hard to compress is the over-abundance of
high-frequency noise. Probably due to bad audio engineering.
In any case, being the talented rippers that we are, having
about 64kbps less bitrate to use on video wasn't a big deal ;)
