PLOT:
Mostly a Kung-fu showcase; a loose script describes Jackie Chan's
character learning Kung-fu from a beggar-master and his pupil while
guarding a caravan from bandits.
RiPPERS NOTES:
Half.a.Loaf.of.Kung.Fu.1980.DVDivX-EPiC was released 2001-12-04. Not
being able to check this release out for obvious reasons, some
investigating had to be done. At the time of the EPiC release, there
was only one company that had released this on dvd. That was Simitar,
and they released it on the US and Australian markets on the 22d of
october 1997.
The Simitar dvd does not contain english subtitles, so the EPiC
release must therefore be an english dubbed version. The first
wide screen dvd version of this movie was released in the UK by the
company Eastern Heroes. That was on the 3rd of june 2002.
The conclusion is that the EPiC release must've been 1) English dub,
and 2) Fullscreen 4:3.
Then there is the Colombia-Tristar version (released on the 17th of
december 2002), which contains subtitles and the cantonese audio track
aswell as an english dubtrack. Sadly, this release is also cropped to
No need to distress however, The Team has gathered no less than three
different versions of this movie, all with different features.
First one out is Half.a.Loaf.of.Kung.Fu.1978.SUBBED.DVDRip.XviD-GREiD,
taken from the above mentioned Colombia-Tristar release with all its
features.
Second one out is Half.a.Loaf.of.Kung.Fu.1978.WS.DVDRip.XviD-GREiD
which was taken from the Eastern Heroes release. This one contains
english dub only and has an aspect at around 2.00:1. The picture is
a little bit jumpy sometimes.
Third one out is Half.a.Loaf.of.Kung.Fu.1978.VCDRip.XviD-GREiD. This
one is taken from the Joy Sales vcd (some preprocessing was done to
enhance the video quality). As this vcd lacks english subtitles (and
luckily they opted against putting the chinese subtitles on the print
itself), we decided to sync the Colombia-Tristar subtitles to this
release which contains cantonese and mandarin audio tracks and is in
a full 2.35:1 aspect.
This is The Team's recommended version.
There is also a japanese dvd release utilizing a remastered Joy Sales
print (and japanese subtitles only). This one however is rare and very
expensive to buy so i guess by leaving that one out, we're leaving
headroom for a future scene release of the remastered dvd :D. And if
we're lucky, maybe some day Joy Sales releases this dvd in HK, this
time around including english subtitles.
To get English dub on this movie, follow these easy steps
Due to codec hassle and platform dependency issues, we have decided
to from now on use the excellent tool found at http://xdelta.org for
applying external dub tracks to our releases.
Windows users: Unpack the movie and extras into a temporary directory.
Run gid-halk.english.bat. Others: Visit the url stated above.
Make sure that you have enough space on your harddrive to apply patch!
