Plot
The Magdalene convents in Ireland were run by the Sisters of
Mercy on behalf of the Catholic Church. They housed young
people sent there by families or orphanages, who were
imprisoned and forced to work to atone for their sins these
ranged from being a single mother, to being too pretty or too
ugly, too stupid or too intelligent, or the victim of a rape
made public knowledge. The term to be served was life:
thousands of women lived and died within the convent walls.
The last Magdalene convent in Ireland closed down as recently
as 1996. This film is based on the viewpoint of four of these
young women in the 1960s, a time wrongly considered by some to
be a time of uncontested freedom for women. It is a fictional
film, but unfortunately tells a true story.
