This is half a horror story, half a mystery story with religious aspects. The
mystery lies in the puzzle of what happened to the victim--not the fact of
her death, which is known from the start, but the cause and manner of it. The
horror lies in the events that trap her, which we're shown little by little,
between the detective's activities, which intensifies the suspense and the
sense of slowly encroaching doom. I found the unfolding of the story very
nicely judged and fascinating all the way through. The only drawback is the
camerawork. Since the film was made in the 70s the camerawork is constantly
distracting the viewer, calling attention to itself and getting in the way
of the action. But in my opinion this is still one of the two or three best
horror films of its decade.
