Under the title "Visions of Europe", Lars von Trier (Zentropa)
is producing a series of five-minute short films on behalf of
ARTE and ZDF. 670,000 EUR have been set aside for the project.
25 directors from 25 different European countries will be
collaborating on the films, with the aim of creating a
contemporary panoramic view of Europe on the eve of the
extension of the European Union to include 25 nations. "
Visions of Europe" is slated for completion in time for the
day the EU expansion goes into effect --1 May 2004. The
directors involved include: Fatih Akin (D), Christoffer Boe (
DK), Francesca Comencini (I), Tony Gatlif (F), Peter Greenaway
(UK), Arvo Iho (EST), Aki Kaurismaki (FIN), Laila Pakalnina (
LET), B la Tarr (H) and Jan Troell (S).
The films will first be shown on television, and later be
available as 35-mm reels for the cinema.
