A few months before World War I, an aging band of outlaws led by Pike
Bishop rob a Texas bank intent on using the money to retire. When the
robbery goes wrong, the gang is forced to flee to Mexico with Bishop's
reformed ex-partner, Deke Thornton, in hot pursuit. With nothing to show
for the failed robbery, Bishop's gang agrees to steal a shipment of guns
for General "Mapache" Juerta, to restore their fortunes. With Thornton
closing in, and their association with the evil Juerta trying their
conscience, Bishop and co. prepare for their lawless past to catch up with
them.

The Wild Bunch is #140 in the IMDB Top 250 films of all time. It's also #9
in its' list of the Top 50 Westerns, and #80 in the AFI list of the Top 100
American Films. This film is perhaps Peckinpah's best, and besides being a
heck of an action film, it's also quite an important one. The level of
violence it displayed was new in films, was quite controversial at the time,
and paved the way for equally violent films in the years to come. The extensive
use of slow-motion violence (see the famous slo-mo fall through the window in
the sample) was a first, and was copied extensively later on by such directors
as John Woo, who built his reputation on it. And it had more edits than any
other film up until then. The included one minute sample has 53 edits alone.
But unfortunately, the film didn't get the DVD it deserved. It's non-anamorphic
widescreen letterboxed, and looks awful. Although Warner Home Video is planning
on a restored anamorphic 16:9 DVD, it won't be released until 2005 at the
earliest. This DVD is very grainy, and therefore hard to compress. It is heavily
Edge Enhanced. See the sph-wildbunch-ee.jpg in the Samples folder. The lighter
colored "ringing" or "halos" around the boys' faces and shoulders show it
clearly. And the DVD is loaded with shimmer from the "aliasing" or "stair-
stepping" resulting from not having enough resolution to resolve thin lines well.
The black lines on the roof in the sph-wildbunch-aliasing.jpg aren't supposed to
be zig-zagged, as they are in that capture from the vob.
PostX released a pretty decent rip of the movie about 3 years ago, and I was
hoping that a fresh rip of it would find favor among the Western film fans,
Classic film fans, and Great film fans all over again. Included are English,
French, and Spanish Subtitles in SRT format.
