[ Release Notes ]
Warning: It's a looong read... ;)
We were the first to bring you this movie back in 2001, now we present
you with the Limited Edition DVD rip, which is dual audio, it contains the
regular english track, and the directors commentary both in one package.
The Limited Edition is remastered in High Definition, and includes
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. The DVD Contained a second disk that had many
unlisted features, one of which is the Chronological Version of the movie
which the director mentioned it didn't exist, but its on the DVD you have
to solve a puzzle to access it. I really wanted to rip that one, but they
were very smart when they made it. The Chronological Version is not the main VTS
video sequence. If you rip it to the hard drive it will just play the regular
movie, on the dvd once you "Solve" the puzzle it will start the movie but
the chapters rearranged chronologically. While the movie is playing in this
mode you cannot select any chapters, fast forward pause or do anything or it
will kick you back into the Title Screen. I will look into how to rip it
according to their chapters later as its a real bitch to figure out, but the
chronological order is very cool I highly recommend you buy the dvd and check
it out, its like a whole new experience. Ok enough about the damn dvd and what
i wanted to do lets get to the features of this rip.
I wanted to include an ac3 track, then i remembered that it also included
commentary that wasn't included on the original dvd because the director was
working on another film (Insomnia). So instead i decided to do, what i think
hasn't been done on a live action movie (ive seen it done for anime), and that
is dual audio divx. Both streams are encoded in highquality VBR, and can be
switched on-the-fly just like a real dvd using Morgan Stream Switcher (details below).
But just a little note about the commentary of this DVD as its very intersting.
There are four different endings to the commentary track in the movie.
The film is encoded as Title 1 on the disc. At the end of Chapter 13 in this title,
at the 1:33:52 mark, there's a branch point that seems to be activated only if you're
listening to the commentary track (soundtrack #4) at that moment.
If you're listening to any of the other soundtracks (DD 5.1, DD 2.0 or DTS 5.1), your
player will not branch and will continue to Chapter 14 of Title 1. If you now switch
over to the commentary, it'll play normally until the 1:37:15 mark, when it will slow
down and then reverse and run backwards (fittingly) for the remainder of the film.
If, on the other hand, you're listening to the commentary track as you cross the
1:33:52 mark, your player will switch (apparently randomly, but consistently until
the disc is ejected and re-loaded) to Title 2, 3 or 4. Each of these titles
contains the final three chapters of the film encoded with a subtly varying-but
non-reversed-version of the commentary.
There's a great deal of overlap between these three versions, but they differ
on some key points (e.g., the Title 3 version states that Teddy is lying to
Leonard at the end of the film, the Title 4 version states that Teddy is telling
Leonard the truth, and the Title 2 version makes no comment on Teddy's veracity).
The commentary had to be edited at the 1:33:52 mark, because it played backwards
as it does on the dvd so it was all garbled, however when i reversed the the audio in
sound forge it started to make sence just as the dvd does when it "randomly" goes to a different
track, the downside to this is the background noises are backwards, so as the directors is talking
the actors voices are now garbled just as it is on the DVD, luckly they were smart enough
to lower the voices so you can barley hear them. Towards the end of the movie you will
hear the comments go into slow motion then stop, this is how it is on the dvd itself, as
its reversing the audio again so it goes back to normal to play the credits and music
(like mentioned above i edited the audio in sound forge so it sounds fine the whole movie).
Whew, enough with the god damn details how the hell do we play this?
To play dual audio divx's you need to have the Morgan Stream Switcher Filter Installed.
Its included with this release but can also be downloaded at
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/stream_switcher.html
Once you have this small filter installed, your ready to play the movie, a warning though
you must play this in Windows Media Player 6.X as its the only version i know that
support the Morgan Stream Switcher, other versions don't support it.
I tried to use Graph edit to make avi shortcuts to play the different
audio tracks but ran into way too many incompatabilites when testing.
All versions of Windows have Windows Media Player 6.X installed but
it may not be the default media player to find it point yourself to
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player" and run "mplayer2.exe"
Then procede to load the avi's from file--> Open. To change the audio track
anytime from regular to commentary or vice versa during the movie
go to "Play" on the toolbar and go down to "Languages" and choose either
"English" or "Commentary". Make sure both the "avi" and "mss" file are both
in the same folder, (the should be by default when you unrar) or else you won't
know what stream your switching from and to, instead it will just say "Audio 1"
and "Audio 2". I hope this wasn't too complicated. Yeah i know its the biggest
god damn nfo ever but i think all the info is necessary, enjoy as much as i did ;)
