Live-action feature about a boy learning
about life through the stories of Uncle
Remus, which are shown in animated segments.
Little Johnny is taken to his grandmother's
plantation where he meets Uncle Remus and
is guided by his stories ("Running Away,"
"The Tar Baby," and "The Laughing Place")
about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear.
Johnny finds friendship with a local girl,
Ginny Favers, but is bullied by her cruel
brothers. When he is accidentally gored by
a bull, it takes more than Uncle Remus to
save him. His parents must reunite, creating
a happy family once more.

Song of the South is one of Disney's most
controversial titles ever, and that really
is a shame, because it's right up there with
the best of them from Disney's golden years.
You've probably seen the classic Zip-a-Dee-
Doo-Dah clip, yet struggled to put it into
context, all because Disney would rather like
to pretend this movie never existed. It most
certainly does exist, and FLAiR is here to
prove it!
Based on the Uncle Remus tales of the south,
this is a sweet story at heart, though obviously
not a particularly realistic depiction of the
Reconstruction era post-slavery relations.
Anyone who's ever watched anything from Disney
knows they're not in the business of realism.
Great performances, great music, and absolutely
stunning animation! This was Disney's first
ever live action feature and the mix of live
action and animation is even more amazing when
you consider this was done more than 40 years
before Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Not only is this the most controversial title
in the Disney library, but as a consequence,
this also has to be one of the most bootlegged
titles ever. There are dozens of sites claiming
to offer official DVD releases, usually with
some cocakamamy story about how rare it is, how
it was only available as a mistake, for a short
while, in a particular country or for a very
select audience. Apart from it certainly being
rare, this is all bullshit!
* SONG OF THE SOUTH HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED ON *
* DVD ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, AND MAY NEVER BE *
But don't take our word for it, take Snopes's:
http://snopes.com/disney/films/sots.asp
Or perhaps the world's largest site dedicated
to the movie:

FLAiR brings you the best possible version
of Song of the South, the Japanese 1990 LD
with digital audio. Sure it has Japanese subs
during the songs and wasn't cleaned up much
for release, but this is the real deal, the
best OFFICIAL version available anywhere in
the world. You're Welcome!
-+ Who We Are +-
FLAiR is a group dedicated to bringing you
long forgotten and neglected titles of days
gone by. Started with the intent of focusing
primarily on '80s childhood gems, over time
that focus has expanded to include a wide
range of rare and out of print material from
VHS and Laserdisc. We only hope you enjoy
this stuff as much as we do.
