A milestone of the silent film era and one of the first "art films" to
gain international acclaim, this eerie German classic from 1919 remains
the most prominent example of German expressionism in the emerging art
of the cinema. Stylistically, the look of the film's painted sets--
distorted perspectives, sharp angles, twisted architecture--was de-
signed to reflect (or express) the splintered psychology of its title
character, a sinister figure who uses a lanky somnambulist (Conrad
Veidt) as a circus attraction. But when Caligari and his sleepwalker
are suspected of murder, their novelty act is surrounded by more super-
natural implications. With its mad-doctor scenario, striking visuals,
and a haunting, zombie-like character at its center, Caligari was one of
the first horror films to reach an international audience, sending shock
waves through artistic circles and serving as a strong influence on the
classic horror films of the 1920s, '30s, and beyond. It's a museum piece
today, of interest more for its historical importance, but Caligari still
casts a considerable spell.

Caligari is ranked 10th in the Top 50 Horror Films at IMDB, and as the
10th greatest silent film of all time at silentera.com. Not just his-
torically important, it's fascinating in its own right. It comes with two
music scores; a spooky atonal one consisting of synthesizer with a small
jazz combo, and a more traditional score (Audio2) of just a synthesizer. I
much prefer the first one, but you can choose which to play. This release
is from the Restored And Authorized Kino Edition, which has better picture
quality than the Image Entertainment version. A comparison of the two can

I believe that the previous release by AEN in 2001 used the PAL version of
the Image Entertainment edition of this film. It was done at 25fps, and as
such had about 40% duplicated frames compared to the true framerate of
18fps. Either that, or it's full of blended frames. I've been unable to
get a sample to check. Although the tools available at the time didn't
allow proper decimation, by encoding so many frames, he was limited as to
the resolution to use. So here's a fresh version at higher resolution,
proper framerate, and 2 music scores from which to choose.
