The Girl with the Hat Box moves with the speed and grace of the best
American silent comedies and is the first of several sparkling films
which established Director Barnet's reputation. The charming Anna
(Anna Sten) works in a hat shop, sharing her small apartment with a
penniless student. She is given a supposedly worthless lottery ticket,
instead of her wages, by her unscrupulous employer. The ticket wins
her a fortune and a madcap chase ensues to possess the ticket - and
Anna's love.

This film could use a restoration. It's jumpy, and it "flickers". I
couldn't do anything about the first, but I improved upon the second
(see the vob and avi samples). Also, in my opinion, at 24fps it plays
way too fast. My tests show the true framerate to be around 18fps. But
converting it messed up the audio so I left it alone. I suspect it was
made 24fps when being prepared for a US showing in 1970. at which time
the audio track was added. I also think that Image Entertainment was
too cheap to convert it back when mastering it for DVD because it would
have meant commissioning a new soundtrack.
