RELEASE INFO
When the sizzling sounds of Brazil entered the mainstream of American jazz
and rock in the sixties, Airto Moreira, the world's foremost percussionist,
was the leader. Performing with his wife, Flora Purim, one of the most
innovative voices in modern jazz, V.I.E.W. VIDEO is proud to present this
steamy addition to its popular "Jazz Series."
Airto, the brilliantly original percussionist, composer and arranger, is also
responsible for the resurgence of percussion in jazz and pop music worldwide.
Beginning his career at the age of 16 playing trap-drums in the local clubs of
Sao Paulo, Airto went on to join the Quarteto Novo, which included the
legendary Hermeto Pascoal. The group set the standard for a new progressive
sound in Brazilian music...the mixing of fiery, passionate rhythms with soft
chord changes. Since his relocation to the U.S., Airto has collaborated with
such artists as Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Weather Report, and Paul Simon.
Flora Purim's six-octave range has allowed her ample opportunity to explore her
unique talent, making her the first singer to couple her pure sound with the
hybrid singing style of Jazz-Latin-Rock fusion. Raised in Rio with the stylized
rhythms of Brazilian street music, she became known while singing the then
avant-garde sounds of Bossa Nova. Arriving in the U.S. in 1968, she went on
to work with jazz greats Stan Getz, Gil Evans, Chick Corea's Return to Forever
group and, of course, her husband, Airto. Flora began to reevaluate
traditional pop/jazz singing, shifting her voice from lyric concentration to
emphasizing the production of natural sounds that allowed her to communicate
with her audience more freely. Today, she has perfected a vocal style that is
truly unique.
Recorded from the Queen Mary Jazz Festival, this live concert on DVD is a
rhythmic, vocal and visual delight...a foot-tapping experience to the sounds of
Airto & Flora Purim, truly two of Latin America's Jazziest All-Stars.
