Der Provinzanwalt Jerry Ryan will nach dem Scheitern seiner Ehe in
New York ein neues Leben beginnen. Nach monatelanger Einsamkeit
lernt er auf einer K nstlerparty die arbeitslose T nzerin Gittel Mosca kennen.
Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich eine konfliktreiche Beziehung mit vielen H hen und Tiefen.
Jerry bekommt bald einen gut bezahlten Job in einem New Yorker Anwaltsb ro.
Er dr ngt Gittel dazu, wieder zu arbeiten, und mietet ihr einen Dachstuhl,
in dem sie eine Tanzschule er ffnet. Doch Gittel f hlt, dass zwischen ihr
und Jerry etwas nicht stimmt. Die Art, wie Jerry jedes Gespr ch ber
seine Exfrau verweigert, zeigt ihr, dass er noch nicht ber sie hinweg ist.
Aus Verzweiflung betr gt sie Jerry. Es kommt zur Aussprache. Jerry will Gittel verlassen.
Doch als er sieht, dass Gittel schwer erkrankt ist, k mmert er sich aufopferungsvoll um sie.
Die Beziehung erholt sich. Solange Gittel schwach und hilfsbed rftig ans Bett gefesselt ist,
ist sie seiner Liebe sicher. Sie m chte, dass Jerry sie heiratet. Doch als Jerry die
Scheidungspapiere seiner Frau in den H nden h lt, wird ihm klar,
dass er eigentlich zu seiner Frau geh rt.
