Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) war ein Cop, bis ihm ein ungl?cklicher Fall von
Polizeigewalt zum Verh?ngnis wurde. Danach musste er seine Marke abgeben, und dass
er nicht auch noch ins Gef?ngnis kam, verdankte er haupts?chlich einem Mann: Nicolas
Hostetler (Russell Crowe), dem B?rgermeister von New York City.
Acht Jahre sp?ter lebt Taggart als Privatdetektiv in einer verwahrlosten Ecke der Stadt,
und jetzt fordert Hostetler einen Gefallen von ihm. Er soll feststellen, ob seine Frau
Cathleen (Catherine Zeta-Jones) eine Aff?re hat. Klingt wie ein einfacher Fall, aber
kaum hat Taggart den Verdacht von Hostetler best?tigt, stirbt auch schon Cathleens Lover.
Das Schwierige daran: Taggart entdeckt hinter dem Mord einen viel gr? eren Skandal, und
mittendrin steckt der B?rgermeister. Jetzt beginnt eine gef?hrliche Jagd, denn Taggart
will Gerechtigkeit erzwingen, egal ob ihn das Freiheit oder Leben kosten wird.
