Auf dem Sklavenschiff Amistad kommt es im Jahre 1839 zu einem Aufstand der Gefangenen, bei dem ein Gro teil der Besatzung get tet wird. Anstatt aber zur ck nach Afrika zu segeln, landet das Schiff in Amerika, wo die Rebellen sofort inhaftiert werden und ihnen die Todesstrafe droht. Da sich niemand f r die Entrechteten zu interessieren scheint, bernimmt ein junger Anwalt zusammen mit einem Ex-Pr sidenten die Verteidigung.
