Notes
We decided to use the Retail order as opposed to the Aired order. Apparently, they
decided to mess with the Aired order to get the Christmasy two parter (The
Homecoming) closer to Christmas (Ain't holidays grand?).
Included is a table to convert our episode numbering to the Aired order.
Ours Aired
s01e01 s01e01
s01e02 s01e02
s01e03 s01e08
s01e04 s01e09
s01e05 s01e03
s01e06 s01e04
s01e07 s01e05
s01e08 s01e10
s01e09 s01e11
s01e10 s01e12
s01e11 s01e05
s01e12 s01e06
Starting with e13, it goes back in sync, if you will, with the Aired order.
Now that that's out of the way, <blog post>
We decided to give this CRF idea a try. These are internals because they
technically fall under the tdx2k9 rulest. The reason being is this line "Other
codecs and containers are allowed for experimental purposes." Since x264, AAC audio
and the mp4/mkv containers would fall under the experimenting part of that, these
(and all other Retail SD.x264s) should be governed according to it.
The only part that doesn't jive so well with this idea is the resolution. However,
we believe it is simply a case of the ruleset creators being human since that
particular ruleset is over three years old and back then, SD TV didn't even have a
defined ruleset nor was there any notion that one day, XviD would be going the way
of DiVx and S/VCDs before it. And as we all know, no one can predict what the
future holds.
The following some thoughts of our own since it appears a new ruleset will be coming.
Container:
Since the tools for, container and the company the created mp4 sucks balls, we're
using mkv. It seems to be more important to have a unified container. The same
tools to make HD releases could be used for the SD ones as well. However, we used
mp4 for the audio because it was a choice between that, mp3, or making an AC3 from
either the 5.1 DTS track or the Stereo PCM track. Since it is almost safe to assume
that mp3 is going out with XviD, all of these are mp4 audio with an mkv container as
5.1 or 2.0 AC3 would've been a bit overkill on an SD cartoon release.
CRF values:
We admittedly haven't paid much attention to what the other Retail SD.x264 releases
have been done for CRF. However, we feel that it should be a set whole number CRF
value. We realize that this hasn't been an issue for the other sections using CRF
but this would prevent useless propers that are done for the reason of "Other group
used 19.89 when it should've been 19.5"
To that end, we propose the following table, "borrowed from the SDTV rules:
19 - Scripted, Talk Shows, Poker, Animation
21 - Documentary, Reality, Variety
23 - Sports, Live Events, Competitive Reality.
The only complication with this is that a show that has a live show (almost) every
year, like 30 Rock, would have 21 episodes @ CRF 19 and one episode @ CRF 23 but
really, it would just mirror what is put out by the TV capture groups during the
season.
We would also like to see more guidance on extras in any future ruleset. As it
stands right now, there is a very little to go on when it comes to dealing with
extras in XviD. What happens when you have 700MB < release < 1400MB? Do you split
it into 700MB+excessMB "CDs"? Do you make one big release that is 1.1GB big with no
splitting? Granted, moving to CRF would make file size predictions and splitting
into CDs pointless. However, maybe there could be a line or two saying what the cut
off is for 15MB and 20MB rar sizes. Then again, this is a niche of a niche type
release.
This is all just a test to see what happens with it since we have a few BluRay sets
that we can test it with.
Saying all that, we are looking to get some dialogue going here. So if you have any
opinion, corrections, etc. on the issue (or just want to accuse us of finding another
way to creditwhore), contact us on IRC
