Film footage of original ska stars in their heyday is all
too rare, with the honourable exception of Island's This
Is Ska, so respect to Secret for catching Derrick Morgan,
a giant of Jamaican music in every sense, in concert.
Promotor Jim Driver has a fondness for ska he's also
put on Desmond Dekker and Prince Buster and this
September 2008 gig was part of his Rhythm At The 100 Club
series.
The porkpie-hatted Morgan is backed by a sharp six-piece
band who rip through Man In The Street before the
partially blind singer is led on. Once he has the
microphone in his hand, Morgan shows that his distinctive
tones are still in full working order. Kicking off with
full versions of his early ska hits such as Forward March
and Don't Call Me Daddy, he moves up to the rocksteady
era with I Am The Conqueror and skinhead reggae with
Johnny Pram Pram, before compacting his and other
artists' tunes in a series of well-drilled medleys.
Pleasingly there's room for Prince Buster's 1963 jibe at
Morgan, Blackhead Chineman, followed by his riposte,
Blazing Fire, before finishing with a crowd-pleasing
skinhead medley.
At 68, Morgan manages to be dynamic without breaking
sweat, his voice always in control. If you like vintage
Jamaican styles, this is a musical feast.
