On July 17th, 1996 at 8:31pm, TWA flight 800 exploded in mid-air
and fell into the Atlantic. All 230 on board perished. Hundreds
of people along the New York coast witnessed the explosion. Over
a hundred describe seeing lights streaking across the sky towards
the plane raising suspicion and fear that a missile had brought
it down. Investigators meticulously reconstructed the aircraft,
looking for any evidence of terrorism they found none. They
concluded that the explosion was caused by a malfunction in the
center fuel tank. This official conclusion has never satisfied a
coterie of independent investigators and conspiracy theorists.
Skeptics are vocal enough that the Board's Chairman, Jim Hall,
feels he must respond with an op-ed piece for the Wall Street
Journal entitled: It Wasn't a Missile.
Among those who read the piece was 54-year-old retired Navy pilot
in Falls Church, Virginia named Bill Donaldson, a former attack
pilot and crash investigator who knows what makes planes fly and
what makes them fall. Donaldson responds to Hall in a letter to the
newspaper. He believes the evidence points to a missile attack, not
an accident. Bill joins the ranks of a growing contingent of
skeptics pursuing their own explanation for the tragedy.
