[ PLOT ]

Boffins with big telescopes have discovered the first habitable planet
outside our solar system in the year 2020. It's called Aurelia, it's 40
million light years away, and it's a place where the imaginations of
excitable scientists in unironed shirts thrive. Here, according to
inscrutable presenter Dr Armand Leroi, "Nothing is what it seems!"
Which means we see lots of strange pink plants that look like roasted
chicken legs and a species of hairless, ostrich-like carnivores with
deceptively unassuming dental work. The inhabitants of Aurelia form the
basis of the opening episode of this ambitious series, which concocts
entirely hypothetical planets from a solid scientific grounding, then
populates them with bizarre but justabout- plausible creatures.
Dramatic stuff, with Dr Leroi's cut-glass diction and imposing eyebrows
adding the requisite gravitas.
