#1.07: Planet of the Frohikes: A Short History of My Demeaning Captivity |
Fri Apr 06 2001 (runtime: 60 min)
Our guest reveiwer for this episode is Dan Deckert, from
the LGM-over-30 list on Yahoo.com. Thanks Dan, for letting |
us use your words!
Anybody who's read any of my X-Files reviews knows that my |
favorite episode are the ones that start well-written and
come across as a total package. They also know that Vince
Gilligan is one of my favorite writers. I've had the bad
luck/timing to miss three episodes of TLG this season, so I |
can't say that Planet of the Frohikes (POTF) is the best
episode of TLG that's ever aired. I do feel safe in saying |
that it is "classic Vince," right up there with Small
Potatoes and Bad Blood, IMHO. In case it isn't yet clear, I |
_really_ liked POTF.
I think that the thing that has really set Vince aside as a |
writer is that he takes his stories absolutely seriously,
even when they're intended to be funny. Sometimes the basic |
concept is really fundamentally strange (Bad Blood and Home |
Fries stand out as examples of this), but it is always
taken completely seriously by the characters and the
progress of the story. This is exactly the approach that
TLG the series needs to be successful, IMHO, because that's |
the essence of TLG, and has been since M&W created them.
They've always been "comic relief," but they've always been |
deadly serious about themselves and their "mission." It's
probably why their own preferred form of interpersonal
humor has always been biting sarcasm, an ever-popular
choice of the intensely serious. :-) (It's also the
_absolute worst_ choice for online humor unless you're
joking with somebody who knows you _extremely_ well. )
So, what did I find most noteworthy about this ep? Just
about everything, but I'll try to single out a few
examples.
Let me start with the choice of Edward Woodward to be
Simon's (I won't use his "slave name") voice. I'm a big fan |
of Woodward, and he can do that "snooty" RP accent as well |
as any actor in the business, though he also reverts to his |
native Cockney accent whenever he has to. He's a master of |
the English language (my personal favorite ) and how to use |
it as an actor. This was a great idea, IMHO.
Jimmy Bond is rapidly becoming one of my favorite TV
characters. He is _so_ pure and true, no matter how
unlikely he is. :-) He's sort of an "idiot savant,"
clueless in most things but an absolute genius in others.
In Jimmy's case, he clearly understands and embraces stuff |
that's fundamentally important in life, and he provides a
great counterpoint to the deep cynicism of the "original"
TLG. He has a much better connection to the rest of
humanity than they do, IMHO, and that keeps their sanity
checks from bouncing, IMHO. Apparently, that fundamental
understanding extends to chimps, too, which may be further |
proof that they're our closest genetic relatives.
I loved the opening scene with the chimps pounding on
keyboards while listening to Shakespeare. Anybody miss the |
reference? Then Vince redefined the classic Chuck Jones WB |
cartoon "One Froggy Evening," when Hasslips brought the
other scientists in to watch Simon type gibberish when he'd |
been accurately transcribing Hamlet.
I thought that Simon was the best "chimp character" I've
ever seen, planet of the apes included. He established a
new standard for "twisty chimps," IMHO. He manipulated
everybody in the ep, even the usually "completely clued"
Yves.
Speaking of Yves, I loved the "spoiled scam" opening and
her reaction to seeing Frohike and Langly in her hotel
room. Her actions after that point were a great display of |
"improv," IMHO. She's always acted liked she knows more
than anybody else, but she was constantly hunting tonight, |
IMHO. Simon fooled even her.
That's enough for a start. What did _you_ think?
