PLOT
John Hannah (Four Weddings And A Funeral, Sliding Doors) stars
as the complex and engmatic Detective Inspector Rebus in this
powerful drama, adapted from the novels of award-winning
writer Ian Rankin - the UK's number one best-selling crime
writer.
EPISODE SUMMARY
Season 1, Episode 4: Mortal Causes
The body of Billy Cunnigham is found dead under the streets of
the Royal Mile, the oldest part of the City of Edinburgh. The
Scottish Crime Squad are interested, believing that there
could be a link with paramilitaries and gun running, but Rebus
isn't convinced. He knows the style of execution is not
consistent with terrorists. When he discovers that Billy was
the son of arch criminal Morris Cafferty, Rebus fears this
could be an underworld revenge killing. When Cafferty escapes
from prison, Rebus knows he will want to get even - things
could get heavy.
At the same time, a spate of racist attacks hits the city. It
seems a far right nationalist organistation is becoming
active. Rebus fears links with recently stolen arms and
explosives. These fears appear to be confirmed when a bomb is
planted in the city centre.
Rebus' investigations uncover links between the death of Billy
and the racist attacks. He begins to suspect a greater
conspiracy is behind it all - uncomfortable close to home.
