The dropping of the atom bomb was the most significant event that
happened in the 20th century. One bomb could kill 100,000 people in
an instant. Once that technology was breached the human race had the
potential not only to destroy itself and the world it inhabited.
The Documentary "The Bomb" takes the audiences as a passenger on the
Enola Gay (The B29 bomber) as we hear from both the pilot and the
navigator a second by second account of the dropping of the bomb and
how it illuminated the entire sky, and blackened the entire city of
Hiroshima. The survivors take us through that horrendous moment when
this cloud subsumed them and the city was incinerated. They give us
accounts of the horrible scenes they witnessed. Bodies ghastly
charred and disfigured. People whose skin was just dangling from
their burnt bodies. People with hundreds of shards of glass piercing
their skin.
Could this tragedy have been averted? Were there military
alternatives to dropping the bombs? Why were the Japanese who were
being decimated by the American bombers everyday so zealous about
refusing to surrender? Why did Truman only wait three days before
he dropped another bomb? The repercussions of the dropping of the
bomb will plague the human race forever.
