Synopsis
Stan (Jim Broadbent), a dedicated warehouse foreman,
is doing his best to ignore his looming retirement.
Having worked for the same company for more than 40
years, Stan has grown to love his job and the sense
of purpose that it gives him.
Despite his 65th birthday being three weeks away, he
is told that his retirement may as well commence
immediately, because he's owed some holiday. Stan
feels crushed and useless; he had hoped he could
continue to work on a part-time basis or even give
his services for free.
To add insult to injury, a meeting with the
insurance man reveals that his pension will not
yield anything substantial to sustain him. The only
way a large sum will be paid out is if he dies.
Seething at the unfairness of this, Stan decides
that the answer lies in his own hands, and decides
to kill himself.
