RELEASE INFO
The 1980 Floor Show was recorded on the 18th, 19th and 20th August 1973,
and was broadcast on the 16th November 1973 (US only).
It was recorded at The Marquee Club, 90 Wardour Street, Soho, London.
The 1980 Floor Show was a pun on the Bowie song 1984 (Nineteen Eighty Floor)
and was the first appearance of Bowie since his much publicised retirement'
on the 3rd July 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon.
It was also his last ever appearance as Ziggy Stardust.
The show itself was a spectacular stage production that was filmed over three days
(as above), at The Marquee Club for the American NBC TV late night show, The Midnight Special.
The idea for the event came when David himself was approached in regards to creating
something for the Midnight Special Rock Series. Bowie's vision was a theatrical
event featuring himself and various rock groups from the 1960's performing in a
futuristic setting. Bowie agreed to the gig after a layer saw that he would get
complete artistic control over proceedings.
Bowie himself had chosen the show venue to be The Marquee Club after his vision
of a full-scale live concert has been rejected by the NBC as too expensive.
The club itself was a famous London gig venue where Bowie had performed himself
as a support act. It no longer exists today, having been demolished. Admission to
the show was by invitation ONLY and included 200 selected members of the David Bowie
International Fan Club. Bowie's performance on Saturday the 19th went on for 10 hours
as each song was performed and filmed over and over, as many as five to six times.
This was because of the small size of the venue there were only two cameras and doing
each song multiple time allowed for camera repositioning and editing.
The set list for the night, including David's guests was: 1984/Dodo; Sorrow; Bulerias'
by Carmen; Everything's Alright; Space Oddity; I Can't Explain; As Tears Go By'
by Marianne Faithfull; Time*; Wild Thing' by The Troggs; The Jean Genie;
Rock n Roll Suicide**; 20th Century Blues' by Marianne Faithfull;
and I Got You Babe (Bowie/Marianne Faithfull).
