Presenter Monty Don celebrates six traditional
crafts that helped shape Britain and its heritage,
setting three people each week the challenge
of learning a trade, including thatching and
stonemasonry. In the first episode Charles Hooper,
Sarah Charlton and Tom Vaughan undertake intensive
apprenticeships working with green wood under
the guidance of mentor Guy Mallinson who shows
them how to cleave the raw material, turn blocks
on a pole lathe, and use a steam bender before
they make a chair with no assistance.
