PLOT
The original 'Grizzly Adams' TV series ran on NBC from
January 1977 to July 1979. The theme song by Tom Pace, that
reached number one on the cvharts in Europe for nine weeks
opened each episode with these words:
Thom Pace Album Cover"Deep inside the forest there's a door
into another land. Here is our life and home. We are staying
here forever in the beauty of this place, all alone. We keep
on hoping. Maybe there's a world where we don't have to run.
Maybe there's a time we'll call our own, living free in
harmony and majesty. Take me home. Take me home."
The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams was initially a feature
film released by Schick Sunn Classic in 1974. It profiled the
wilderness life of James Capen Adams, a mid-1800's mountain
man who left civilization after being falsely accused murder.
In the hills Adams rescued a grizzly bear cub named Ben' that
he went on to raise, as he lived his fugitive life among other
wild animals. The story was loosely based on the real
historical character known as John Grizzly' Adams (1812-1860)
a former Boston shoemaker who became a great frontiersman and
bear tamer after migrating to the west coast. Sunn's 'family
friendly' version of Adams' story captured its audience.
EPISODE SUMMARY
1-12 Home of the Hawk
A tough old settler named Metcalf (Jack Kruschen) and his
daughter Deborah (Margaret Willock) travel west into the
rugged mountain territory. Their wagon becomes stuck in a
muddy river and Metcalf gets trapped in the water when the
wagon rolls back onto his leg. Ben helps Adams (Dan Haggerty)
and Mad Jack (Denver Pyle) rescue the settler by pushing the
wagon out of the mud.
While Metcalf lets his leg mend at Adam's cabin, Deborah
befriends a wounded hawk that Adams is caring for. Her father
continually badgers her about keeping away from the animals
and staying close to the cabin. But Deborah has a longing to
learn more about the wilderness, so she joined Adams and Ben
on a hike into the mountains to pick berries.
When Metcalf fins out that his daughter has gone off with
Adams, unescorted, he becomes angry. Deborah and Adams return,
and Metcalf orders his daughter inside.
The next morning, Deborah slips away at sunrise and takes the
hawk into the forest to explore. She is followed by a hungry
wolf, who chases her into a rock canyon, trapping her on a
high boulder. Adams and Ben arrive in time to rescue Deborah
from the wolf.
Metcalf learns an important lesson; that if he wants to have
his daughter's love and respect, he must let her be free, like
the hawk.otherwise she may leave and never return.
