Episode 1
Aired 17 February 2008
When the reclusive Stephen Ezard returns to London for
the funeral of his brother Michael, an aid worker killed
by a landmine, he feels like a stranger in his own country.
He finds a world that has changed subtly but significantly
from the one he left biometric ID cards are compulsory,
passenger profiling at all major transport hubs is common
practice, public spaces are monitored 24 hours a day by digital
cameras and armed police patrol the streets.
Stephen flees to Michael's flat, but he is shocked to
find a desperately sick woman there, tended to by Yasim
who introduces herself as Michael's wife. When the woman,
Nadir, dies, Stephen and Yasim connect through their anger
and sorrow and sleep together. The next morning, Stephen is
called to a meeting with a company called Inquirendo, who
offer to fund his research in return for his public backing
of their new project, TIA (Total Information Awareness),
a super-database which will enable the government to perform
searching background checks on suspects, trace their movements
and profile citizens to detect likely future threats.
Stephen declines their offer and races back to the flat to see
Yasim. However, to his horror, she has vanished and the flat is spotless.
Later, old flame and government minister Eleanor Brooke turns
up in a bid to persuade Stephen to support TIA, and Stephen
wonders if the database could help him find Yasim.
Someone else is interested in Stephen too the menacing David
Russell. And watching Russell are three high-level security
personnel, led by Turney, with a big secret to hide.
Episode 2
Aired 24 February 2008
Stephen wakes up on the floor of a research lab after
being attacked while searching for Yasim, as the
dynamic thriller starring Benedict Cumberbatch and
Robert Carlyle continues. In his desperation he calls
Eleanor for help, but she's in the middle of a crucial
debate at the House of Commons on TIA (Total Information
Awareness) and tells him to check into a hotel and
calm down.
When a fire alarm forces him to evacuate his room,
Stephen is ambushed and bundled into a van. Finally,
he comes face-to-face with Russell at his hi-tech
warehouse lair, complete with a sizzling electric perimeter fence.
Russell wants to know why Stephen was at the lab,
why he's looking for Yasim and, most of all, what
happened to Nadir. He's disappointed to discover
that Stephen is just a civilian inadvertently
mixed up in whatever's going on.
Meanwhile, Nye is out on the Afghan-Pakistan
border investigating the site of Michael's death. He's
concerned to discover that someone was seen nearby after the explosion.
Stephen arrives back at his hotel room to find his shoes
newly polished outside his door he's unaware that they
have been fitted with a radio frequency ID tag to track his movements.
Later, he is confronted by Yasim, who is angry that he
has been following her. She's scared she fears Michael
was murdered because he was trying to prove a link between
a Hepatitis B vaccine used in the refugee camps and the
disease that killed Nadir. She asks Stephen to help her
approach another biochemist, Professor Lawrence Cooper,
to do an autopsy on Nadir's body.
However, Russell once again steps in and Yasim is forced to
reveal that Nadir's body is hidden in Michael's grave. But when
they dig up the grave, they find a different body altogether
and an anguished Russell reveals that he is Nadir's father.
Episode 3
Aired 2 March 2008
Stephen and Yasim return to the apartment, unaware that the
assassin is waiting for them, as the dynamic thriller starring
Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Carlyle continues. Russell arrives,
just in time, and promises answers if they'll help him find his
daughter's killers.
They agree that Yasim can hide out in his lair and Stephen will
go back to work, using TIA (Total Information Awareness) to access
data on staff at Kellerman-Deloit, the manufacturer of the vaccine,
in a bid to target someone who might provide them with inside information.
Meanwhile, Michael is worried about Yasim and Nadir. He goes to
meet a shocked Bepa, a Croatian friend who operates several shady
businesses, including one forging IDs, but he doesn't know what's
happened to Yasim or Nadir. Michael also wants IDs for the group of
refugees he was smuggled in with, and goes to make some investigations
himself at Kellerman-Deloit.
Stephen suspects someone else has been at the flat and sweeps for bugs.
Eleanor arrives, at first angry for him missing the party to celebrate
TIA getting voted in, and tries to seduce him.
The next day, Stephen uses TIA to pick Caroline Scott as someone who might
talk about Kellerman-Deloit. Outside the factory, Stephen thinks he sees Michael,
back from the dead. Michael is sure he saw Stephen, too, and his fears are
heightened is his brother involved in the disappearance of Nadir and Yasim?
Stephen follows Caroline to the supermarket where she eventually reveals that the
production line was closed for safety reasons last year. Using Russell's computers,
Stephen discovers four biochemists visited the plant during the closure. All of them
have since been murdered.
However, Turney has discovered that Stephen has got rid of his tags and decides it's
time to bring Eleanor into the secret they're protecting. Stephen returns to the flat
and is astounded to find a sick refugee in his bed. Then a sack is thrown over his head...
Episode 4
Aired 9 March 2008
Stephen comes face to face with his brother Michael, who is back from
the dead, as the dynamic thriller starring Benedict Cumberbatch and
Robert Carlyle continues. Michael doesn't trust Stephen and follows
him to Russell's warehouse, setting off an alarm that pulls Russell
away from crucial surveillance on Nye and Gibbon.
There's a scream and Stephen fears his brother has been electrocuted
on the protective fence, but out of the shadows walks Michael and Yasim
is reunited with her husband.
As Yasim reels with shock, Russell confronts them. He is angry they
have compromised him, so destroys his hideout and leaves them to fend
for themselves.
Nye and Gibbon, meanwhile, visit a detention centre where a refugee
has died from the mysterious disease. Gibbon, who is losing his nerve,
finds Professor Cooper there, about to perform an autopsy. Nye calls
a clean-up team to remove the body.
Michael persuades a furious Yasim and Stephen to work with him. He's
narrowed the bad vaccine down to one batch EZ759 and wants to blow
the conspiracy of silence open. But they need a blood sample from a
sick refugee who came in with Michael, which means getting to them
before Bepa helps them disappear.
They arrive at the station at the same time as the police. Michael and
Yasim slip away but Stephen is taken to Eleanor, who tells him that
Inquirendo will fund the next five years of his research if he leaves
Britain now. Thinking he's lost Yasim, Stephen reluctantly agrees but,
as he reaches the airport, he has a revelation.
When Turney and Eleanor learn Stephen didn't get his flight they use
TIA to strip him of the ability to use his ID, bank card and mobile.
Even the pawn shop won't serve him and he ends up in the "swamp"
a place where the new ID-less underclass bed down. He is now a shell
of his former self.
