EPiSODE SUMMARY
Jamie Oliver is in Los Angeles at the start of this
series to get a taste of real Mexican food, but he
spends a lot of time observing life "in the hood" and
hanging out with former gang members and ex-drug
addicts. Perhaps he's been watching too much Louis
Theroux, although he doesn't look entirely comfortable
if the conversation veers from enchiladas to gun crime.
There's cooking, too. Just not as much as you might
expect. There's very little in the way of recipes
either. It's more general stuff along the lines of
"chuck in your freshly chopped cactus, squeeze on some
good ol' lime juice and add enough chillis to set your
mouth on fire". However, for those of us for whom
Mexican food means tortilla chips, salsa and melted
cheese, it's an eye-opener. It turns out that salads
play a big part in real Mexican cuisine, as does the
spicy sauce called "mole" usually poured over chicken,
but which Jamie adapts to use with a chocolate and nut
tart. It's Jamie, but not as we know him.
