PLOT
In a parody of the Film Noir gangster films of
the 1930s, wisecracking canine character Ace Yu
arrives in Dog City, the busy, dangerous and /ruff/
town inhabited by colorful Muppet dog characters.
Following his recent inheritance of The Dog House
bar in the center of the City Ace is soon approached
by crime syndicate boss Bugsy who /hounds/ Ace for
protection money. Refusing to pay or fight Bugsy
resorts to kidnapping Ace's love interest, to make
Ace /dig up/ the cash. Determined not to /roll
over/ Ace is forced to /sniff/ out a plan to try
and rescue his girl, and put an end to Bugsy's
evil ways. It's a /tail/ "Yu" don't want to miss!

Originally airing as half an episode of The
Jim Henson Hour, a series not unlike The Wonderful
World of Disney, this send-up of the classic
gangster genre was originally inspired by the
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge oil paintings of dogs
playing poker. Obviously presented by Rowlf the
Dog, Dog City also has cameos of nearly every
other Henson dog, including Sprocket from Fraggle
Rock and Baskerville the Hound from the 60s Purina
Dog Chow commercials starring Rowlf. Interestingly,
this is also a rare example of Disney allowing
Henson the use of a Muppet character after they
bought the rights to them - Rowlf is even included
on the 2010 R1 DVD.
Like The Christmas Toy, this was later spun off
to a separate series, but featuring a combination
of puppetry and cel animation, produced by Nelvana
in Toronto.
