Are we alone in the universe? Can the barren,
icy or fiery worlds beyond our planet support
life and, if so, what kind?
In 1906, astronomer Percival Lowell claimed that
the markings he observed on the surface of Mars
were canals devised by a drought-ridden civilisation
desperately trying to channel water from the planet's
polar ice caps. Though his theory was considered
far-fetched, the questions at the heart of it have
consumed mankind for eons: are we alone in the universe?
Can the barren, icy or fiery worlds beyond our planet
support life and, if so, what kind? But the essential
question whether or not there is life elsewhere can only
be proven if we find life itself. The means to do this is
now possible within our solar system. Mars still dominates
our quest and the current Mars missions are actively looking
for signs of life on our arid neighbour. But there are worlds
beyond Mars that may also harbour life.
