P L O T

Ning Tsai-Shen, a humble tax collector, arrives in a
small town to carry out his work. Unsurprisingly,
no-one is willing to give him shelter for the night,
so he ends up spending the night in the haunted Lan Ro
temple. There, he meets Taoist Swordsman Yen Che-Hsia,
who warns him to stay out of trouble, and the beautiful
Nieh Hsiao-Tsing, with whom he falls in love.
Unfortunately, Hsiao-Tsing is a ghost, bound for all
eternity by a hideous tree spirit with an incredibly
long tongue that wraps itself round its victims and
sucks out their life essence (or 'yang element')...

Welcome to my ripping nightmare...The Chinese Ghost Story
trilogy has haunted my dreams the last couple weeks.
Anything that could go wrong while ripping these, has.
After testing 3 or 4 different methods for encoding at
25 fps, it was determined that repal achieved far better
results than any of the others.  The DVD quality of these
movies is pitiful to say the least.  I was forced to use
several quality filters on top of the normal encoding
ones.  Once I finally achieved a good avg DRF, I moved on
to the next problem, audio.  This was really nothing big
just that there were 2 chinese audio tracks, and both had
to be encoded to find the language that fit the language
spoken by the actors.  And now to the real headache...
subtitles...  I regret to inform you that the subtitles
would not extract off the dvd/vobs.  I resorted to using
subrip which did a halfway decent job, however, after
running it, only about 2/3 of the subs were extracted.
The rest of the subs had to be manually typed in and the
timestamps manually synced.  So unfortunately I was
unable to process the other languages, because I am not
familiar with any of the other languages in order to fix
speech syntax, etc.

OK, on to the important technical items.  The audio was
clearly done in a studio, and not synced as nice as most
most of us are used to.  For the majority of the time the
sync is fine, but in a few parts one sentence will be
right on, while the next sentence will be just minutely

Well I hope my time and effort will at least make a few
people's day, cuz it sure made my day rough, but lemme
just say...the sense of real accomplishment is definitely
